ELEKTRON AG and Signify realized Switzerland’s first circular luminaires "Luma gen1 UP" connected to Interact City. Existing luminaires were upgraded to state-of-the-art technique including Zhaga-connectivity, instead of replacing them: Saving 76% CO₂ and valuable materials. The city now monitors and controls both new and circular luminaires in Interact City, saving energy and maintenance costs while achieving its sustainability goals.

Customer challenge
Until now, luminaires in public lighting were used linearly and disposed of at end of life. ELEKTRON AG aimed to change this by providing a refurbishment service including a connectivity upgrade to Interact City, together with its first mover customer in Grenchen. The goal: Use materials sustainably, reduce CO₂ emissions, and increase energy and maintenance efficiency. The challenge was to connect both new and upgraded luminaires in Interact City.
The solution
Signify's first generation of Luma luminaires were circularly upgraded in Switzerland by a social institution. The housings were reused and equipped with a Signify upgrade kit, saving around 76% CO₂ compared to producing new ones. On top, each luminaire now includes two Zhaga interfaces for seamless integration into Interact City, enabling smart control, 30% energy savings, and major efficiency gains in daily operation. Additionally, light color changed from 4000K to 3000K to meet modern street lighting standards.
