Brașov City continues its investment program in efficient public lighting solutions and is replacing all classic sodium lighting fixtures with LED lighting fixtures on streets where this system does not yet exist, in order to switch to 100% LED lighting.

Thus, in addition to the 8,200 existing LED public lighting systems, the municipality has begun installing another 8,425 such systems.

In addition, the entire lighting system on the city streets will be equipped with a remote management system, which will allow efficient control of the public lighting operation and rapid identification of malfunctions.

“We have managed to implement the project to increase the efficiency of public lighting by replacing classic sodium lighting fixtures with LED lamps, which are more economical, more efficient, and can be adjusted through the remote management system. We were able to complete this project and, in this way, Brașov will practically have 100% modern LED lighting. In short, we can say that we have taken a very important step in terms of energy efficiency and reducing energy bills. We are among the few cities in Romania that have managed to reach this level."

Customer challenge

The energy consumed by the public lighting infrastructure in a city accounts for up to 40% of the total energy consumed by the municipality, so the urge to do real savings is more real than ever. Also, in a time dominated by IoT solutions, the old generation of luminaires such as Sodium High Pressure Lamps are old news. So a solution to really reduce energy costs, but also to improve the availability of the public lighting system using modern smart lighting control and monitoring software was necessary.

Another element that was taken into consideration, the quality of lighting provided to the citizens, coming from the appropriate light temperature, going to the right amount of light in the streets and closing with the uniformity of the illumination.

The solution

The energy efficiency project that we are implementing in the municipality of Brașov is one of the largest projects implemented in Romania. It involves replacing 8,425 lighting fixtures with modern LED lighting fixtures equipped with a remote management system. This system allows the control of each lighting fixture individually. It collects data on the operating parameters of the lighting fixture and can receive commands regarding switching on, off, and possibly dimming (increasing or decreasing the light intensity, n.n.) for each lighting fixture through the remote management platform, which is managed by the dispatcher. We receive alerts for each lighting fixture if it is functional, if it breaks down, etc. By replacing these 8,425 lighting fixtures, the system produces a saving of 60%, which, in monetary terms, brings savings to the municipality’s budget of approximately €0.5 million annually.
