Customer challenge
For SOFICO, the Walloon infrastructure financing company responsible for managing Wallonia’s motorways and main roads, the highest priorities for Wallonia's road network were safety, sustainability, and cost. The company needed to ensure that Wallonia possessed a safe road network with a steady flow and a sustainable lighting network to operate in line with European climate goals.
Solution
The Lumières 4.0 plan, the result of a public-private partnership between SOFICO and the LuWa consortium, provides intelligent LED lighting across a 2,700km stretch of motorways—all controlled by an Interact connected lighting system from Signify.
To guarantee its lighting solution was sustainable, Signify proposed using its new circular LED luminaires from Philips. Because all components of these luminaires can be reused at the end of their service life, they were the best choice both economically and ecologically, not to mention the fact that their circular design makes them easier to repair.
The lighting on each route is controlled from the Perex traffic centre near Namur, Belgium, and adjusted based on traffic, weather conditions, accidents, road construction, and repairs. Interact automatically and immediately sends data-rich alerts regarding system outages or interruptions in service, as well as using real-time performance data to assess when luminaires are likely to need replacing, allowing for preventive maintenance. This limits the need for hazardous roadside work, improving safety for maintenance workers.
The connected LED luminaires paired with Interact contribute to a 76% reduction in electricity consumption. For SOFICO, that means a significant reduction in operating costs. This reduction allows the region to recoup its investment. Meanwhile, the energy savings will result in a reduction of 166,000 tons of CO₂ emissions over 20 years.
