Hillwood Polska fights light pollution with Signify

Poland’s leading commercial real estate developer turns to connected light.

"Hillwood's goal has always been to create modern warehouse facilities while also taking care of the neighborhood and the natural environment.”

The Challenge

Outdoor lighting on warehouse buildings can lead to light pollution, negatively affecting the nearby environment. Aiming to act responsibly, Hillwood has implemented steps to limit this issue. At its Janki Sokołów logistics center, Hillwood chose a lighting system from Signify that focuses illumination precisely where and when it’s required, helping to minimize the impact on the surroundings.

“At Hillwood, we prioritize environmental and nature conservation,” explains Emilia Bigos, Property Manager at Hillwood Polska. “We’re also mindful of the local community, which is why we’ve taken steps to reduce light pollution near our sites. We sought a solution that would lessen environmental and community impact while offering flexibility in lighting control and cutting down on energy use. That led us to partner with Signify.”

The Solution

Hillwood replaced the old LED lighting fixtures on the building exteriors with high-efficiency Philips UniStreet gen2 LED luminaires from Signify. Although these luminaires are typically used as cobra heads for roadway lighting, Hillwood made the unusual decision to mount them directly on the building façades. The angle of the luminaires and the light distribution were controlled so that only the Hillwood building itself is illuminated, leaving the surrounding areas dark. The UniStreet luminaires were integrated with an Interact connected LED lighting management system from Signify, specifically designed for city lighting. With Interact’s scene management capabilities, Hillwood can schedule the luminaires to dim to 25% at night, when only safety and security activities are taking place. This not only minimizes light pollution around the building, but it also saves the company energy.

Integrating the luminaires with Interact brings additional benefits in terms of increased flexibility and control. The system allows for flexible grouping of luminaires, smooth dimming, defining different lighting behaviors for different areas of the facility, and simplifying and improving lighting maintenance.
