Customer challenge

Baronscourt Park in Edinburgh has emerged as a benchmark for sustainable urban development, blending safety, environmental stewardship, and cutting-edge technology.

When The City of Edinburgh Council identified an urgent need to enhance safety in its public parks whilst adhering to the city’s ambitious sustainability goals, they planned to create a project aiming to provide reliable lighting for park pathways, reduce dependence on electricity and protect the park’s ecological balance.

By integrating smart lighting systems, the Council sought to create an adaptive solution that could respond dynamically to user activity and provide data for future improvements.

The Solution

To make Baronscourt Park a safer and more sustainable place, The City of Edinburgh Council partnered with Signify to deliver reliable pathway lighting whilst reducing energy use and protecting the park’s ecology. The project combines new and upgraded lighting, using solar hybrid luminaires that draw on solar power when available and seamlessly switch to grid power in low-light conditions. Motion sensors ensure light is provided only when needed, cutting energy consumption and unnecessary light spill. The enhanced lighting improves safety for pedestrians and cyclists, encourages evening use of the park and supports greater community engagement and active lifestyles.

The Result

Baronscourt Park became the first site in the UK to feature SunStay Gen2 Hybrid solar luminaires, paired with Interact City smart lighting management software. It delivered measurable benefits including energy efficiency, carbon reduction, enhanced safety and ecological preservation, and overcame sector challenges like safety & accessibility, energy costs &efficiency and ecological impact.
