Lighting New Paths: Empowering Young Women as Solar Technicians in the Philippines

March 12, 2026

In the Bangsamoro region of southern Philippines, young women are stepping into new roles as solar technicians – supporting their communities, gaining economic independence, and challenging gender norms along the way.

Bangsamoro region has a long history of conflict and the highest incidence of poverty in the country, limiting employment opportunities for youth. In response, BRAC, an international non-governmental organisation, has trained 50 young women from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to become solar lighting technicians within the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP).

Through hands-on training, young girls gained technical skills and learned how to grow a sustainable business. The training included practical skills like budgeting, market research, and customer outreach, along with using digital marketing tools like Facebook and TikTok. Many of the girls continue to receive coaching and mentorship to strengthen their confidence and grow as entrepreneurs.

However, during the project the team and the participants faced several challenges. Heavy rains, flooding, and safety concerns delayed some activities. In addition, limited funding slowed business growth for some, and others were facing delays in getting official permits. Besides, deep-rooted gender biases in some communities made it harder for the young women to be accepted as business owners or solar technicians. Moving forward, the project team sees the need to focus more on overcoming these cultural barriers, along with financial and legal support, to better empower young female entrepreneurs. The network of potential employers and companies also is planning to be expanded to neighboring municipalities.

Nevertheless, today half of the graduates are employed, while others are engaged in small businesses selling solar and electrical products. A little part is continuing their education, doing part-time services during school breaks or weekends. They already make a difference by repairing solar lights in homes, schools, health centres, and even in high-risk areas like bridges and winding roads, helping their communities stay safer after dark.

“I am very thankful to BRAC, our donors (Signify Foundation), and the local government of Upi for sharing this opportunity and for extending blessings to those with fewer opportunities in the community, like me. Through this social and economic skills training, I have gained new abilities and have been certified in electrical and solar installation and maintenance. I am now engaged in providing solar home services in our community and have a minimum income that supports my family. At the same time, I am pursuing my studies in the ALS — Alternative Learning System — to become more professional. Thank you to all my fellow youth, BRAC, TESD, and the Signify Foundation.” – says Charina S. Bello, a nineteen-year-old married woman from Looy South, Upi, Maguindanao del Sur.
This project is more than technical training. It is a testament to what young women can achieve when they have the tools, support, and belief in their potential. Working together with BRAC and the local communities, the YEP initiative is building brighter futures, one solar light at a time.
