LED lighting powers sustainable education in Central Uganda

June 8th, 2026

A partnership with All We Are is bringing clean energy indoors to ten schools, replacing kerosene lanterns and helping thousands of students study safely.

In the rural Gomba and Kalunga districts of Central Uganda, achieving affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy remains a critical challenge for educational institutions. Many schools have historically relied on costly and polluting energy sources like kerosene lanterns and diesel generators for nighttime lighting, posing safety risks for boarding students who need to study after dark.

To address this electricity gap, the Signify Foundation teamed up with nonprofit organization All We Are to provide clean, modern energy solutions through the Solarize Uganda Now initiative. This collaborative effort targets underserved communities lacking access to the national grid, establishing a firm foundation for local youth to pursue their education in a healthy, well-lit environment.

The partnership successfully brought energy-efficient LED tube lights indoors to ten primary and secondary schools across eight local villages. By transitioning away from hazardous fuel-based lighting, these modern installations have completely transformed classrooms, study halls, and dormitories into bright, comfortable learning spaces. This phase of the project directly supports a total impact population of 7,774 people, including 5,235 day students, 2,273 boarding students, and 266 educators. The reliable indoor light extends productive learning hours safely, helping schools reduce their electricity expenses by up to 80% and allowing administrations to channel those crucial savings back into expanding their academic facilities.

Long-term sustainability and local ownership sit at the very heart of this initiative. Following the completion of the physical wiring, All We Are conducted a comprehensive two-day testing and training period to equip community members with basic system maintenance and troubleshooting skills. Each participating school established its own dedicated Solar User Committee to manage the day-to-day oversight and coordinate technical support. Through this proactive, community-driven framework, local educators and parents are taking full responsibility for their clean energy infrastructure, ensuring that thousands of Ugandan youth continue to learn and thrive under dependable light for years to come.
