Unlocking a brighter future in Cochabamba, Bolivia

June 8th, 2026

An employee-nominated lighting project helps Eufronio Viscarra School become energy efficient, lowering costs and allowing it to open a volunteer-built library and extend evening learning.

When Signify employee Giovana Perez Ayala nominated a rural public school for a lighting upgrade, she set in motion a collaborative initiative that would open new opportunities for an entire community. This project was born out of her deep personal connection to the Eufronio Viscarra Elementary School in the countryside of Cochabamba, Bolivia, where her late father had studied as a child.

Driven to honor his memory through the employee-led Project In/visible, Giovana championing the cause was the essential spark that made the initiative possible. For many years, the historical school, founded in 1922, had struggled with outdated and inefficient lighting infrastructure that left its 200 students trying to focus in dim classrooms during the winter months.

Light ensures that a student's opportunity to succeed is no longer dictated by a lack of infrastructure or electricity access."

To bring Giovana's vision to life, the Signify Foundation joined forces with local partner Electrored and colleagues from Signify Uruguay to deliver modern LED lighting solutions. This collaborative effort completely transformed the physical learning environment, upgrading 20 classrooms, administrative areas, and campus corridors with energy-efficient technology. The new installation effectively replaced old fluorescent tubes and successfully revitalized a school theater that had long fallen out of use due to poor illumination, turning it back into a functional space for creative and community development.

Lighting is a transformative tool in education. It creates the optimal biological conditions for children to learn and focus."

Transitioning to efficient LED technology is expected to cut the school's electricity bills by at least 50%, allowing the administration to reinvest those direct savings into building the campus's very first children's library. This reading space became a true community triumph, utilizing books donated by Signify colleagues alongside shelves built by volunteer parents.

With reliable illumination extending the productive day, the school now thrives as a vibrant evening hub for its daytime students and an additional 400 to 500 community members who gather after dark for adult education courses and cultural workshops. Through this collective effort, Giovana's nomination closed a beautiful circle, ensuring local children have the dignity, resources, and light to succeed.

My father attended this very same school, where a teacher once gave him the opportunity to study and change his life. Today, thanks to Signify, I can give back to his community and ensure that the children there now have the light they need to succeed, just as he did."
