Lighting up possibilities for Curaçao’s next generation

June 15th, 2026

Together with the Johan Cruyff Foundation, the Signify Foundation has lit up a community football court in Willemstad, giving young people in the neighbourhood somewhere safe to be after dark.

In the Rádio Clube neighbourhood of Willemstad, Curaçao, the Jurriën Timber Court has long been a gathering point for the local community. But without adequate lighting, its usefulness ended at sunset, leaving children, young people, and families with limited safe options for evening activity. The Signify Foundation, working alongside the Johan Cruyff Foundation, identified the court as an opportunity to extend access to a space that already mattered to the community, and to demonstrate what light can make possible in the Caribbean region, where the Foundation is building a growing presence through similar projects in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

The project delivered professional LED luminaires across the Cruyff Court, the adjacent public square, and the nearby playground, with poles positioned to ensure even, reliable coverage of all shared areas after dark. The lighting solution was designed for energy efficiency and long-term durability, built to serve the community for years.

Today, the illuminated court draws around 900 people each week, including children and adolescents taking part in Cruyff Court programmes, adults playing football into the evening, and residents of neighbouring streets who can now move through the area more safely after dark. For the Johan Cruyff Foundation, sport is a deliberate tool for youth development, a way to build teamwork, discipline, and confidence in young people who need structured activity and a place they can call their own. The lighting makes that possible after sunset. In 2025, the project reached 113 girls, representing nearly a third of all young participants.

Light creates safety. Light creates time. Light creates choices."
