Empowering Kenya's next generation of sustainability champions

May 29th, 2026

In Kenya, the Bright Dream Project is equipping teachers and students to become champions of sustainable energy in their schools and beyond.

When the Signify Foundation equipped 100 secondary boarding schools across Kenya with LED and solar lighting in 2023, it brightened classrooms and study spaces for thousands of students. But light, on its own, is only the beginning. The Bright Dream Project, a partnership between the Signify Foundation and Africa Connect Kenya, takes that investment a step further: equipping teachers and students with the knowledge and confidence to take ownership of that light, and to become champions of sustainable energy in their schools and communities.

Central to this approach is a dedicated learning pack, developed as part of the Bright Dream Project, which gives teachers the tools and frameworks to bring energy sustainability to life in their classrooms and school clubs.

Between May 2025 and March 2026, three trainings were completed across Kenya, bringing this learning pack to educators in regions spanning the west, center, and east of the country. The first training brought together teachers from western Kenya in Kisumu. The second reached educators across Nairobi, Machakos, and Kitui. The third extended further, into Nakuru, Embu, Nyeri, and Laikipia, completing a nationwide reach that reflects the true ambition of the project.

Among the participants, a teacher from Homa Bay County reflected: "The training opened my eyes to the role teachers play in shaping student attitudes toward sustainability."

Each educator arrived ready to learn something new and bring it back to the young people in their care. What followed spoke for itself. Teachers returned to their schools energized, briefing colleagues and preparing their students before follow-up visits even began. In classrooms and school clubs across the country, students engaged with the ideas they brought back, raising their hands, asking questions, and stepping forward as ambassadors for energy efficiency.

A teacher from Busia County captured the spirit of what was unfolding: "I now understand how small behavior changes can lead to big energy savings in our school."

The Bright Dream Project is ultimately about more than lighting. It is about the moment a student realizes they have a role to play, and the teacher who helped them see it. As the project moves toward its goal of reaching all 100 schools and training 200 educators, it carries with it a growing network of young people who are not waiting to inherit the future but are already shaping it.
