Lighting for good in Piazza della Scala

    December 19, 2019

Inside the Teatro alla Scala there’s opera to set your ears tingling. And now for the festive season, in the Piazza della Scala across the street there’s a feast for the eyes, courtesy of Signify’s Color Kinetics LEDS

Teatro alla Scala is one of Milan’s most visited landmarks, attracting residents and tourists from across the globe. This Christmas, the Piazza della Scala across the road has undergone a magical transformation – with a sustainable twist.

Outside the iconic Teatro alla Scala opera house, there’s a striking seasonal addition. Overhead, 200 meters of RGBW IP67 LED strips, provided by Ilti Luce, and a DMX system combine to create a breathtaking, color-changing ring, encircling the statue of one of the world’s most famous innovators, Leonardo da Vinci.

This is coupled with the iPlayer® 3, provided by Color Kinetics, a compact lighting system controller used to play the pre-programmed and custom-authored light shows chosen for the Christmas theme.

Passers-by can visit two interactive totems, where they can calculate their own carbon footprint, reflect on their own good intentions for 2020, and of course, capture a “Green selfie”.

The installation is a partnership between Signify, energy provider Engie, and the Municipality of Milan. It’s a poignant reminder that positive change can happen through educating and engaging with the public, and that beauty and sustainability really can go hand in hand.
