Behind A Universe of Lights: Human-led creativity in the age of AI

Signify’s brand film combined virtual production, AI-supported workflows, and real human stories to bring big ideas to life.

As AI becomes part of more creative tools and production workflows, creative teams are facing a practical question: how can they embrace technology without losing the human perspective that makes stories meaningful?

A Universe of Lights, Signify’s latest brand film, which premiered earlier this year at Light + Building in Frankfurt, was created to bring together the company’s story of light, innovation and human impact.

For Signify, the starting point was not technology itself, but people. In an industry shaped by constant technological change, the real measure of progress is not the tools we use, but the value we create in people’s lives.”

Technology and purpose

While AI adoption is growing quickly across businesses, many organizations are still working out how to use it in ways that create meaningful value.

For Signify’s latest brand film, the answer lies in using AI as a support for human creativity, not as a substitute for it.

At Signify, innovation is about combining technology with purpose. With A Universe of Lights, we wanted to show that AI can bring creativity to life without replacing the people behind it. By combining virtual production, AI-supported workflows, and real human stories, we’ve created a new way of producing content that is not only efficient and scalable, but also stays true to the values of authenticity, responsibility, and innovation.”

The film features Signify employees and voice recordings captured as part of the production process. These choices kept the story grounded in real people, while AI-supported workflows helped the team work more flexibly.
Designing light around people
Reimagining production

The film was produced largely within a virtual environment, eliminating the need for traditional sets and international shoots.

This project challenged us to rethink how a global brand film can be made. Using technologies like Unreal Engine, Gaussian splatting, and virtual production, we built a full visual universe without traditional shoots or large sets. AI supported the process, helping us work more flexibly while keeping creativity human led.”

Diego Molina,

Creative Director of Popcorn Brain

These techniques allowed the team to realize a more ambitious creative vision than would have been practical using conventional production methods. Virtual environments and advanced rendering technologies expanded what was creatively possible while keeping the production grounded in human direction and decision-making.

Designing light around people
Minimizing physical sets, travel, and large-scale logistics naturally aligns with Signify's broader sustainability objectives around energy and resource efficiency. But the opportunity expands beyond efficiency: it also points to a new outlook on scalability, with content that can be easily personalized for different audiences, customer segments, and campaign needs.

The idea of creating a reusable content ecosystem that can be adapted for different audiences and customer segments is particularly compelling. It makes the story feel bigger than the film itself and opens up new possibilities for how we build and scale brand storytelling in the future.”

Key innovations include:

  • Virtual production powered by Unreal Engine
  • Use of Gaussian splatting, LiDAR scanning and photogrammetry
  • AI-supported workflows without AI-generated people
  • Reduced need for physical sets, travel and large-scale logistics
  • Creation of a reusable digital content ecosystem for future campaigns

Creativity, strengthened by technology

As AI becomes more common in creative production, many teams are exploring how to use it responsibly 2

For companies experimenting with these technologies, the challenge is not whether to use AI, but how to do so in a way that preserves creativity and trust.

A Universe of Lights presents a proof point for a new model of creativity: one that brings together AI, virtual production, and human storytelling to create content that is more scalable, adaptable and emotionally resonant.  The film offers a perspective of how brands can embrace technology without losing sight of what makes great storytelling work best: human purpose, human judgement, and human experience.

McKinsey’s 2025 global AI survey reported that 88% of organisations use AI in at least one business function, but nearly two-thirds have not yet begun scaling AI across the enterprise.

2 Adobe’s AI and the Creative Frontier study found that while creative professionals see AI as a valuable tool for saving time and generating ideas, they also place a high value on transparency, attribution, and clear disclosure of AI-generated content.
