    Plastic free packaging

    The global waste issue

     

    Every year 2 billion tonnes of waste are produced, and a 70% increase is predicted by 2050. More than 90% of waste is openly dumped or burned in some countries. This is taking its toll on our planet. Improper waste management pollutes our soil, air, oceans and groundwater.
     

    Also, eight million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans every year, killing 1 million marine birds and threatening hundreds of marine life species. Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues.

    We are actively striving for a reduction of the environmental impact of our products. As part of our packaging policy, Signify already uses 80% recycled paper for its packaging. And to help fight the global plastic waste issue we are taking the next step: we will phase out all plastics from packaging for consumer-related products with the aim to be plastic-free in 2021.
    By phasing out plastic used for consumer product packaging, Signify will avoid the use of over 2,500 tonnes of plastics per year. This is equal to 125 million PET bottles which, placed in a row, would stretch more than 8,000 kilometers or 5,000 miles. This is roughly the distance from: Oslo to Cairo or Anchorage to Miami or Buenos Aires to Mexico City or Jakarta to Wellington. Our new packaging is also smaller in many cases, reducing carbon emissions from transport and materials by 6,000 tons per year – the CO2 equivalent that 270,000 fully grown trees absorb in a year.

    Our packaging policy requires all packaging to contain on average more than 80% recycled paper and virgin materials must be from certified renewable sources. In cases where paper-based materials aren’t applicable, we look into other non-plastic alternatives. See our packaging policy for more details.

     

    Signify has already started the phase-out of plastic by removing commonly used plastic inserts from Philips Hue packaging. Replacing blister packs with paper-based box packaging will be sequenced across our product portfolio and different regions, starting with LED bulbs in Europe in the third quarter of 2020, and the rest of the world following from the start of 2021.
