Lighting the way for safety, sustainable livelihoods, and nature conservation around Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Located in northeastern DRC, Garamba National Park is part of the Congo Basin, home to the second largest rainforest in the world. Given its natural riches, Garamba could be a thriving eco-tourism destination. Instead, it has been the frontline of an ongoing 30-year struggle against poaching and the ivory trade, creating a hostile environment for local people and the park’s wildlife. In response to this fragility, Nuru partnered with the Signify Foundation to deploy new renewable energy infrastructure with 35 solar streetlights in Tadu and Faradje.
In a region with little economic opportunity, the provision of lights aims to stimulate eco-tourism and other livelihood developments, safeguarding the well-being of humans and nature, while promoting opportunities beyond artisanal mining and wildlife poaching.
