Key topics and learnings

What if modernising lighting does not always require starting from scratch? New research analysing 50 real-world lighting projects examines what happens when businesses and public authorities first consider what can be retained, upgraded, or reused. Join us to explore the business case for circular lighting, the value of existing infrastructure, and the changes needed in procurement and practice to make these approaches work at scale.

Learning objectives:

  1. Replacement is not always the most economical route. Across 50 real-world projects, circular approaches were associated with lower capital or maintenance costs in 37 cases.
  2.  Existing infrastructure can hold significant value. Retaining and upgrading housings, wiring, mounting systems, and other infrastructure can extend asset life, reduce waste, and avoid the cost and disruption of full replacement.
  3.  Circularity is about making better decisions, not keeping everything. Depending on performance, cost, and whole-life value, the right choice may be to maintain, repair, upgrade, retrofit, reuse, refurbish, remanufacture, or replace.
  4.  Procurement can play a key role in scaling circular solutions. To move beyond individual projects, buyers need to assess whole-life value, including maintainability, upgradeability, retained infrastructure, and verified performance and savings.
