In partnership with UNHCR, donors, and Lightpower, 782 solar-powered streetlights and 82 floodlights were installed by April 2024 in three refugee villages in Pakistan, Saranan in Balochistan, and Khazana and Naguman in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
These settlements, being home to Afghan refugees, have long faced challenges due to a lack of electricity and limited or no access to lighting. As a result, children and females had less freedom of moving around the village after dark, community had reduced time for leisure, and the risk of gender-based violence increased.
With the support Signify Foundation and local partners, lights were installed in community spaces, health units, schools and mosques. Now residents can safely gather after dark, support community activities, and reduce their reliance on harmful energy sources.
