Innovative patient care with biodynamic lighting

Máxima Medical Centre, Veldhoven, Netherlands

Máxima MC is a leading hospital in the Brainport region. At MMC, the health of patients is in good hands. To further improve care, the hospital tested biodynamic lighting in the intensive care unit, with the aim of promoting both staff's well-being and patient recovery. Signify NatureConnect lighting is installed, which simulates natural daylight and creates a skylight effect.

At Máxima MC, we recognize the profound impact that lighting has on us as individuals. That's why we opted for biodynamic lighting in the ICU and NatureConnect in the patient room”

Customer Challenge

In the ICU, all patients have their own room with beds positioned facing the door, allowing staff to easily observe them. However, this arrangement prevents patients from seeing outside. Given the importance of research at Máxima MC, the hospital decided to explore solutions that simulate this connection with the outdoors by integrating the NatureConnect skylight offering a dynamic day rythm while having the option for staff to control the lighting.

Solution

Although the ICU patient rooms at Máxima MC have windows, the placement of the beds and surrounding medical equipment obstructs the view of the outside world for both patients and staff. To solve this problem, the hospital implemented NatureConnect lighting. This system creates an artificial "sky view" for patients and provides staff with a user-friendly interface to adjust the lighting to specific needs – whether patient comfort or operational requirements.
