Climate Transition Plan

Signify has a critical role to play in ensuring that the transformative power of light does not come at the expense of our planet. That’s why we’ve put together our Climate Transition Plan — an extensive document that outlines our roadmap to net-zero emissions by 2040, not just in our own operations, but across the entire value chain.

Putting impact first

Working towards our goals

In order to reach the objectives set out in our roadmap, we're focusing on the four As

of the We Mean Business Coaliton's climate leadership framework:

Ambition

Action

Advocacy

Accountability

Ambition

To continue to lead the transformation of our industry towards a net-zero future, we have set ambitious — but achievable — targets. We have divided our goals into long-term targets and near-term targets: from becoming net-zero by 2040, to a 50% reduction in absolute scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse emissions by 2030 (compared to the 2019 base year). Crucially, all of our objectives have been reviewed and validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) — this ensures that they’re realistic, measurable, and in-line with the Paris Agreement 1.5° objective.

Action

We’ve talked the talk — now’s time to walk the walk, because words without action are just empty promises. From suppliers, logistics and operations to travel and commuting, product use phases, and end-of-life, we’ve looked at our emissions across the entire value chain and detailed the steps we can take to make significant change in each area. This includes incentivizing suppliers to commit to renewable energy, electrification of the logistics fleet and last-mile distribution, and further extending the use of LED — the single biggest factor in reducing the lighting industry’s emissions.

Advocacy

Advocacy is a significant part of Signify’s Climate Transition Plan — which means working with like-minded organizations to drive policy change in crucial areas. To reach net-zero emissions, we need support from governments and businesses, particularly in converting power grids to renewables and incentivizing greater energy efficiency across our economies. This will reduce carbon emissions, lessen our reliance on costly fossil fuels, reduce costs for households and companies, and create millions of local, clean energy jobs.

Light is essential for our society. With our leadership comes the responsibility for the way lighting impacts the environment around us."

Accountability

As the world leader in lighting, it’s on us to step up and take accountability for our impact and inspire others to do the same. We’ve shifted our business toward more energy-efficient and longer-lasting LED lighting. We endeavor to manage this transition responsibly by ensuring that our products remain affordable, particularly for those on low incomes. When our factories close, we also give suppliers time to adjust their production and support former employees in finding new jobs.

With connected lighting

When “Yes” is selected the estimate considers the saving generated by a connected lighting solution that is a system using Internet of Things (IoT) technology to connect LED lighting devices to a network: lights can be remotely controlled, monitored, and optimized through a management system. Connected lighting solutions are designed to provide a range of benefits, such as energy savings, improved user experience, and enhanced safety and security. Otherwise, when “No” is selected the estimate considers the saving generated by standard LED lighting solution.
