The Metro Tunnel is the biggest transformation of Melbourne’s rail network in 40 years. It includes twin tunnels under Melbourne’s CBD with 5 new underground stations, creating more ways to move around Melbourne with new connections and more choice. Major universities and hospitals, as well as destinations like the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and the Shrine of Remembrance, will all be better connected to the rail network.

Customer challenge
With approximately 5000 luminaires across the site, there was a need to monitor and provide real-time feedback on driver failures and system operability. The subterranean nature of the project requires consistent and reliable light levels with a high degree of uniformity across the sprawling concourses and platforms.
The solution
By implementing a DALI solution, the project team individually control all luminaires to tailor each drivers output and achieve lux uniformity across the public areas ensuring illumination during the station’s opening hours is compliant with strict regulatory measures and allows discreet control of lighting scenes during which the station is closed to the public while still providing adequate lux levels for staff and security monitoring. Paired with the BMS systems integration via OPC, maintenance staff get real-time data on lamp or driver failures.
