Philips Hue introduces product packaging without plastic

  • Removes 99.9%[i] of plastics from Philips Hue product packaging
  • Redesigned packaging uses bio-based materials, improving recyclability and minimizing environmental impact

Eindhoven, the Netherlands Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, has today announced that it has eliminated 99.9%i of plastics from its Philips Hue product packaging. The packaging is also smaller, contributing to a reduction in CO₂ emissions of 6,000 tonnes per year[ii] across the full consumer product packaging portfolio.

The milestone is part of Signify's wider ambition to maximize recyclability while minimizing the environmental impact of its packaging as outlined in its Brighter Lives, Better World 2025 sustainability program. In pursuit of this, the company has developed alternative, plastic-free solutions to replace hundreds of packaging components. These include recycled paper-based materials and bio-based alternatives such as bamboo, which can deliver an improved unboxing experience, while also guaranteeing product protection.

The team has reduced packaging weight and volume and improved transportation efficiency, while working with suppliers to ensure they adhere to the guidelines and obligations included in Signify’s Sustainable Packaging requirements.

Innovation is core to what we do, and that extends beyond the product itself to how we bring it to our customers. The removal of plastic from Philips Hue product packaging is an important step forward in our journey to reduce the environmental impact of our products. Our progress is thanks to collaboration right across Signify—and is a clear example of how sustainability and innovation go hand in hand.”
