Innovation goes deeper in Piła, Poland

Signfiy’s marine lighting finds a surprising new role: improving underwater visibility for divers at an accessible diving center.

Underwater sports enthusiasts know that diving can be a truly magical, immersive experience. Now, a groundbreaking facility in Poland is expanding access, with help from Signify.

The Diving Rehabilitation Base, operated by the Krok po kroku HSA Association, floats on the waters of Lake Płotki near Piła. This one-of-a-kind base is designed not just for exploration, but also for inclusion. It is the only floating diving center in Europe – and perhaps globally- that is purpose-built to welcome people with disabilities into the world of diving.

Inside the base, up to ten participants can access both wet and dry zones. The dry part of the base includes a training space and a respite room. The heated wet zone is equipped with diving gear and allows year-round access to the water. Outside, a wide floating platform provides open access to the lake.

A custom-built artificial bottom allows instructors to adjust the water depth, creating a controlled, pool-like environment in serene natural surroundings.

Lighting the depths

"Clear visibility below the surface is essential both for the safety and comfort of participants. To elevate the experience of divers at the base, Signify proposed a solution."

"We’re honored that we can help such an extraordinary organization continue restoring hope and joy to people with disabilities," said Signify’s Karol Lewandowski, who worked with the HAS Association on the project.

The team introduced the Seacage 680W compact light from ONCE by Signify, a product typically used in salmon farming. The Seacage light, which was originally developed to support health and growth in hatcheries and deep tanks, proved remarkably well adapted to this unconventional use.

The light is energy efficient and cost effective to run, requires minimal maintenance, and has a rugged design that is durable in tough underwater conditions."

“This is a great example of what can happen when creative problem solving meets cutting-edge technology. What started as a tool for nurturing aquatic life will now help a wider group of people experience the joy of diving,” said Signify's Marcin Andrzejewski.

A trial run with a single Seacage light delivered immediate benefits: sharper visibility, a stronger sense of safety, and an overall improved diving experience. The HSA Association is now applying for government support to expand its lighting system with four additional units.
