What is the EPBD—and why does it matter for lighting?

The revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) aims to cut energy use and reduce emissions. Since buildings account for 40% of the EU's total energy use and 36% of its CO₂ emissions, the directive demands a drastic improvement in building performance. It sets new performance expectations for non-residential buildings across EU member states. 

 

In this context, lighting plays a crucial role — as one of the most accessible and effective ways to boost energy efficiency and support EPBD-driven renovation.

What are the new requirements for buildings?

Building automation and control systems (BACS) – like Signify Interact – are required in non-residential buildings 

  • By 2025 for buildings with over 290 kW HVAC

  • By 2030 for buildings with over 70 kW HVAC

Lighting controls system with automatic occupancy detection are required in non-residential buildings 

  • By 2028 for buildings with over 290 kW HVAC

  • By 2030 for buildings with over 70 kW HVAC
