The city of Kortrijk is completely revived by Circular Lighting

    Kortrijk Library, Kortrijk, Belgium

Visitors discover principles and applications of a circular economy at Kortijk Library - part of an OVAM initiative with the Flemish waste management agency and environmental organization Bond Beter Leefmilieu.

"Now that lighting is no longer a product, but a service, we should never worry about lamps and luminaires again. This also gives us access to the very best LED lighting on the market. We would never have been able to finance such a product with our own resources, and I think that is the case for many governments"

    Customer Challenge

The city of Kortrijk were looking to become more sustainable, improve experience, save money and hassle, so opted for Circular Lighting. The city buys light from Signify instead of the luminaires. Over the 10-year performance contract, Signify ensures that the lighting system is constantly updated with the latest updates, and provides a new destination for the luminaires after the contract has ended, by means of re-use or reuse. The installed lighting is intelligent - program lighting schedules, adjust according to available daylight and presence detection. This allows energy savings of up to 80%.

    Solution

This project ventures into unknown territory. It is innovative in more ways than one. By purchasing the light, the city has been relieved of all maintenance, replacement or upgrading concerns during the contract period. The project is also unique in that it is possible to reuse the equipment until it can no longer be recycled. Finally, this circular philosophy enables other organizations to enjoy – at resale – high-performing luminaires at a low price.
