Smart Illumination: Decarbonisation and Enhanced Safety in NSG Group's Production with Signify’s LaaS and Interact

NSG Group

Signify partnered with NSG Group, parent company to glass manufacturer Pilkington UK, to deliver a comprehensive lighting system upgrade in the main warehouse and new RP5 textured lineUK6 float-line area[JS1.1], prioritizing decarbonisation and employee/visitor safety. The project addressed out-dated fixtures and compliance challenges while achieving significant energy savings and creating a safer working environment. A total of 826 fixtures were replaced, and 890 fixtures, including additional general and emergency lighting, were re-installed to improve visibility, workplace safety, and ensure compliance with regulations. This ambitious undertaking, executed under a 10-year 'Light as a Service' (LaaS) contract, achieved a 66% reduction in energy consumption and guaranteed light performance for the full duration, all without any safety incidents.

“This lighting upgrade has been a game-changer for our warehouse and RP5 texture line. Not only have we significantly reduced energy consumption in line with our decarbonisation goals, but we’ve also created a safer and more compliant working environment. The partnership with Signify has delivered outstanding results, and their attention to safety throughout the process was exemplary.”

Customer Challenge

Decarbonisation and Energy Efficiency: NSG Group required a solution to replace aging, inefficient fixtures with a system that aligned with their sustainability targets. The new lighting system achieved a 66% reduction in energy consumption, showcasing NSG Group's commitment to decarbonisation.

Employee and Visitor Safety: The previous lighting design was inadequate, leading to poor visibility and compliance challenges. To address this, Signify re-installed 890 fixtures, including additional emergency lighting, to improve overall illumination and ensure a safer working environment for employees and visitors. Accessibility and Safety Concerns: The installation site posed unique challenges, with luminaires mounted at a height of 13 meters above the operational glass float-linefloat and texture glass line. Signify implemented stringent safety measures, delivering the project with zero safety incidents during both de-installation and re-installation. Hazardous Work Environment: The float-line warehouse and texture glass line area contains complex machinery, glass storage, and large lifting equipment, presenting significant risks. Signify’s meticulous planning ensured the project was completed without disrupting operations or compromising employee safety.

IoT

The Interact Pro software suite was instrumental in optimizing the performance of the newly installed Philips GentleSpace luminaires. Through close collaboration with NSG Group teams, Signify used the software to automate lighting controls such as occupancy sensing and daylight regulation, ensuring energy efficiency while prioritizing employee safety. The scene management capabilities of Interact Pro allowed for customized lighting adjustments tailored to operational needs, enhancing visibility in critical areas and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Additionally, its energy optimization features directly supported NSG Group's decarbonisation goals.

Why This Project is a Great Customer Story:

Decarbonisation Leadership: The lighting upgrade aligns with NSG Group’s sustainability objectives, achieving a dramatic reduction in energy consumption.

Enhanced Workplace Safety: By improving general and emergency lighting, the project has elevated safety standards for employees and visitors alike.

10-Year LaaS Contract: The decade-long Light as a Service agreement guarantees consistent light-level performance while eliminating maintenance concerns for NSG Group.

Zero Safety Incidents: Despite the high-risk environment, the project was executed flawlessly, ensuring no harm to personnel or disruption to operations.

Conclusion:

This project highlights Signify’s ability to deliver cutting-edge industrial lighting solutions that prioritize sustainability and safety. By leveraging Philips Lighting and the Interact Pro software suite, NSG Group has successfully transformed its production environment, achieving decarbonisation goals, enhanced compliance, and improved employee safety.
