Lighting Studies of the Coronado Bay Bridge

Tune in to this provocative episode, in which Forman and Associates details their involvement with the Engineering Lighting Study of the Coronado Bay Bridge in San Diego, California.

This temporary Color Kinetics installation faced numerous complex challenges: temporary support structures 200 feet in the air, temporary power, wireless data, and a 1 mile catwalk. The study by the California Coastal Commission has since completed, but the story continues, as Forman and Associates talks about the permanent build and what's to come with this iconic southern California bridge.

By attending this webinar you will understand the technical challenges associated with temporary lighting installations on large-scale infrastructure projects. Temporary power requirements and strategies, adjustable suspension methods on bridge I-Beams, safety devices and protocol, wireless DMX Tranceivers OR 2.4 GHz solutions, the role of prefab, and ensuring success are all important aspects to consider.

Analyze the role of environmental agencies in the approval process for temporary and permanent lighting installations on landmark structures. It is necessary to review the dynamics involved in this project, including the economic driver for the Bay (Port), the artist's role in Phase I over land, the involvement of the electrical contractor, engineer, and lighting designer. In Phase II over water, the owner of the bridge (Transportation) plays a crucial role along with the economic driver for the Bay, the design team consisting of the artist, engineer, and lighting designer, the general contractor, and the electrical contractor. The protecting agency of the Bay (Coastal Commission) and consulting agencies, as well as ancillary interests such as the Federal Government and military bases, should also be considered.

Evaluate the significance of lighting design in enhancing the aesthetic appeal and visibility of iconic architectural landmarks. Lighting design serves as an anchor for a city, a point of symbiosis for varying peoples of a city, a city link, and a source of interactivity. Considering these factors is crucial when designing lighting installations for iconic architectural landmarks.

Explore the transition from temporary lighting installations to permanent lighting solutions, including the design considerations. Some important factors to consider in this transition are angle requirements for proper illumination, beam spreads, color scheduling according to fish migration, power sources, method of control, cloud connectivity, and mounting methods. By addressing these design considerations, a successful transition from temporary to permanent lighting solutions can be achieved.

In conclusion, understanding the technical challenges of temporary lighting installations, analyzing the role of environmental agencies, evaluating the significance of lighting design, and exploring the transition to permanent lighting solutions are all crucial aspects when working on large-scale infrastructure projects. Taking these factors into account will lead to the successful implementation of lighting installations on iconic architectural landmarks.

Brian Ellsworth is in his eleventh year with Forman & Associates. Previously he worked in the electrical distribution industry for twenty-five years. His passion for lighting was developed while working as a light fixture consultant for set decorators and art departments in the major motion picture and television industry in Los Angeles in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. This introduced him to a wide variety of lighting companies and fixture types. His work at Forman has lead to industry relationships with a wide variety of creative people in lighting design, architecture, universities, and the major studios in Los Angeles. He considers it a privilege to work on projects that are inspirational and lead to community engagement with landmark locations. An example of such a project is the award winning 2nd Street Tunnel lighting in Los Angeles. He is a father of two and enjoys art museums, music, and exercise.

Brendan McCartney has worked for large lighting corporations and small business electrical contractors, bringing with him intimate knowledge of dynamic lighting systems. He has worked on iconic global projects such as the San Diego Unified Port District’s Engineering Lighting Study of the Coronado Bay Bridge. From conceptual design to commissioning, Brendan has worn many hats, and intends to bring this value to his customers. He is a father of two, and can often be found hiking or playing guitar.
