    Key topics and learnings

LEDs are solid-state light sources that can change their intensity at a very fast rate. This is one of the main drivers behind the current revolution in the world of lighting, but the fast speed of light modulation can also give rise to unintended and undesirable changes in people’s perception of their environment, which are called “temporal light artifacts” (TLAs).

In some very specific entertainment applications, such changes of perception due to light modulation are desired, but for most everyday applications TLAs are detrimental. They diminish the perceived quality of light and can also lead to a decrease in performance, increased fatigue and even acute health problems like epileptic seizures and migraine episodes.

In Is it all flicker? you will see how lighting manufacturers, lighting application specialists, universities and governments are looking for ways to quantify and counter obtrusive flicker, stroboscopic and ghost effects.
